Description
Antique and vintage stone troughs have long been vital in rural communities, typically serving as feeding and watering stations for livestock. Dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries, these troughs were made from sturdy materials such as slate and limestone, ensuring their durability and longevity. In the past, limestone troughs were often used as practical yet beautiful water reservoirs, connecting people to nature through their functional yet organic design. With time, renowned landscape and interior designers repurposed them as fountains or planters (depending on their size). These troughs were typically used to collect and channel water, often placed in gardens or courtyards where they could serve as fountains or simple water features. Carved from natural limestone, they embodied the essence of earth, with their weathered surfaces and subtle veining reflecting the passage of time. As fountains, they brought a soothing flow of water, creating a serene connection to nature’s rhythms. The porous, rugged texture of limestone would age gracefully, enhancing the trough's natural appeal and further embedding it in the landscape, blurring the lines between art, utility, and the beauty of the environment. Sourcing these troughs is becoming more and more difficult as they are scarce and not easy to find. The process to transport these items is also highly complex and requires a specific skillset. Put together, all these elements make this product highly exclusive. At Jērra, we are proud to be the first bringing these treasures to the UAE.
